ROOTS ARE WHAT REMAIN

Survival Is Not a Soft Presence—it asks something of us.

We don’t choose hardship, but life eventually asks each of us to carry more than we imagined we could.

Sooner or later, certainty gives way to uncertainty—plans change—relationships change. Bodies change. We discover that roots and resilience are something quietly formed while no one is watching.

For years as a public health practitioner, I used systems thinking to uncover the root causes of health issues. But there was a time in my real life when things were quite different. Questions that required answers became deeply personal, and lived experiences became my greatest teacher.

That season changed me, stripping away everything unnecessary and replacing it with survival. Survival is what ordinary people become when life shifts—whether it’s for us or a loved one. It’s asking another question of a doctor. Sitting through another appointment, advocating, choosing love even when fear would be easier.

No one walks through that kind of fire unchanged, and neither did I.

I found strength, clarity, and the unrelenting guarding of my time. The need to explain myself—ever—lost its necessity. The opinions that once occupied far too much space simply became… quieter.

What remained were the roots.

Not perfect. Not polished—but mine. And those roots continue to anchor me today.
They remind me that strength isn’t measured by how much we can carry. It’s measured by what we refuse to lose about ourselves while carrying it.

Life eventually changes all of us.
The question is never whether we will be changed, but here’s the thing—it’s what will remain after everything unnecessary falls away.

Embrace the journey.
Rooted. Rhythmic. Renewed.
